Back in the studio for the show today and I'm excited to have a nice long weekend with my family. There is quite an array of articles/blog posts on the show today including a horrific escalator accident that involved a child in India. I think Elevator and Escalator Safety needs to be promoted more in this country, especially now that their vertical transportation is growing. On this weeks program escalators seemed to dominate the news when it came to accidents plus the Space Elevator seems to be getting more traction with Japan investing 8 billion into developing a program that they hope will be successful. I had a great time at the NAEC convention last week. It was nice to see everyone who attended!  Special thanks to the NAEC for putting on such a first class event. It was a really busy week with meetings, setup, exhibiting and tear down but one that makes me appreciate everything that goes into it each year. We've got a good show for you everyone. More stories on the five year old that fell down the hoistway in New York as the DA is launching an investigation into the accident to determine if there was any wrong doing by anyone. I think that this might be the first incident where a District Attorney has gotten involved...at least it's the first time that I've heard of it. Some other interesting news stories to talk about as the week was packed with some good ones. One of  which was that the coward that attacked that elderly women last week was caught, thanks to the video taken in the elevator. It's great to be back from vacation everyone! After a week off in the Northwood's of Wisconsin I'm glad to be home. I'm a bit swamped as was to be expected and am glad that the numbers of stories online were low but the importance of some of them very high, two of which had tragic endings. The first involved a five year old and the second a construction worker. It makes me cringe just thinking about it. When you see unsafe elevators let someone know, especially the building owner! No client is worth the loss of a life. I don't care how cheap or how much work they promise to give you down the road Take a proactive step and identifying problems with elevators and notifying your customer about them. Document them and press them to make safety upgrades! I hope everyone here had a nice three day weekend and Fourth of July!  We had great weather here in Chicago and the extra day was just great! I actually had little time on Sunday to go to the library, check some books out and read them in the back yard while enjoying on a beer. Now life doesn't get much better than that. Another action packed show today everyone as we cover more accidents relating to elevators and what I hope is the end of them for a while. We will be skipping over Elevator News on the show today. Instead I share with you my interview with David Cooper, from LECS, UK.  I spoke with David a week and a half ago regarding his escalator accidents research report, The Lift Academy, The University of Northampton and the Lift & Escalator Industry Charity. David presented his Escalator Accident paper at the NAVTP Conference in May and had some important information to share. It was also nice to hear about the other endeavors he's been involved with too. Next week I'll be attending the Elevator U Conference which will be held in Arizona. Back from the NAVTP Forum and had a great time. It was nice to see everyone out in San Francisco. All the presentations were really good. Each time I attend a conference like this I realize how much I don't know and how much I have to learn. One presentation given by David Cooper covered his escalator accident research data which included videos! These were unbelievable and made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. We're going to see if we can coordinate a telephone interview for the show. If you saw these videos your jaw would drop. On some happier news The EESF Silent auction raised $3,000 which was great and everyone have a good time. If you're a consultant and aren't a member of the NAVTP you should consider joining. Snow is once again falling here in Chicago and the kids and I are making the most of it by building forts, having snowball fights and sledding. I don't remember getting as many snow storms as we have since I was a kid. But I guess everything back then was larger than life. We do have some important news stories to talk about on the show including two important lawsuits and one elevator accident that ended up in a fatality. Plus the Crocs Corporation is back in the lime light! Plus there are a couple of good stories that feature elevator companies. This one shows just a little how tough our industry is from an inspector’s and contractor’s point of view. An elevator in a condo is not working, the city came in and served six final inspection notices and the association still will not do anything. This kind of thing must happen a lot.
