I’m a bit aggravated with the goofs over at the Gothamist regarding an article they wrote about Elevator Escalator Safety Week and the Safety Rider Progam. What’s even worse is the commentary from the readers of the story. I’m asking that we all chime in and post our own comments regarding why it’s important to promote elevator and escalator safety and why there’s a need for it.  Perhaps a simple search for elevator/escalator accidents online might have turned this article into one with a little more depth and understanding why this kind of information needs to be shared.  So please visit this link and share your own personal comments and stories.   (Pictured: An escalator accident waiting to happen.)

This week was filled, over 350 articles, covering the exciting news regarding the Space Elevator Games and the tragic death of Drummer Henry Fuch who fell down a shaft after trying to get out of a stalled elevator. This accident could have been prevented had Henry simply stayed put and waited for help to arrive. Remember the safest place to be when an elevator is not working is inside the elevator.  Wait for help to arrive!

These kinds of accidents can be avoided with working door restrictors and longer toe guards. The technology is there, even to retrofit the oldest elevators out there. It’s the balance between elevators being grandfathered under older elevator codes and building owners who can’t afford the upgrades. I’d rather save a life than take my chances with a potential lawsuit.

Nice short show today everyone. It’s been a hectic couple of weeks and now that the crew I work with is on the mend I feel as if I’m starting to catch whatever the heck was going through our offices last week. Hopefully it won’t go full circle. Next week is our prize pack giveaway, this time we’re just giving away $100 Visa Gift card. I figured we could all use the extra cash or if you’d like to use it for drinking money, you can go that route too. Thanks for tuning into day everyone!

Another busy week at work as our shop has the flu bug going around which means double duty for a few of us here so remember to wash your hand's everyone and as often as possible. I’m pretty sure that I’m catching it as well as I’m tired and feel the onslaught of being tired and having a sore throat. Another week filled with article's everyone. You’ll enjoy the one written by Jim Collet, from Elevator Man Stories. I think it’s important to remember those who we worked with who may have passed on. Jim does an excellent job at doing this.  Also on the program today a story covering what I believe to be the worst elevator mine accident I've ever read about, in which 26 miners in China where killed.  All I can say I'm glad that I live in the USA where codes and regulations are there to protect workers and the general public.

I’m not sure where global warming is occurring or not but here in Chicago we seem unaffected by it. It’s October 7th and its windy and chilly. I just hope that winter doesn’t hit with a vengeance. This is the first show of the month and we’ll cover the calendar of events and news of the week. I was surprised at the number of stories I found online today. One story with a tragic ending involved a man in a motorized wheel chair who reportedly died when he drove into an elevator shaft and fell eight stories. As well as this accident we had another escalator handrail slider who is in serious condition after falling over the side of the unit.  Okay, note to self and anyone else who might be reading this. Sticky escalator hand rails not so slippery, keep both feet on step, hold on to handrail and watch step when getting off.  Support the EESF at www.eesf.org and perhaps people like this will be getting an education from their kids who have the chance to attend the Safety Rider Program!

Back from the United Show in Orlando, Florida and still trying to recover from it. I believe that everyone enjoyed themselves and had a great time.  There was so much going on that it was hard to do everything you wanted too.  Lots of great educational sessions, a huge exhibit hall with some great booths.  Plus there were a lot of people in attendance.   I’m putting the show together a night earlier as I have a packed week of playing catch up,  travel and a CEA meeting this Thursday night. Yes I’m looking forward to the weekend! Good show today everyone, it’s been a while since we had some stories with meat on them! Short show from Orlando, nice and sweet! It’s been great to see everyone who stopped by to say hi at the convention today. I appreciate the warm words many of you have shared about this program. As you all know this is a labor of love for me and I do it with the goal of bringing our industry closer together each week.  I realized this morning why we attend these events, whether they be for CECA, Elevator U, NAEC, NAESA or the NAEC.  It’s about seeing people who we haven’t seen in a while to find out how they’re doing.  It’s about finding out how the economy is impacting our companies. It’s about learning new things through the educational opportunities. It’s about networking with others who either could use a little help or provide a little help. It’s more than the exhibits, it’s more than the education, and it’s about working together as an industry to make it a better one.

Next week many of us will head to the United in Orlando Show for what should be a very busy and productive week.  While there won't be a show next week I do plan on posting a short summary blog post each night so check back Sunday through Thursday for updates.  On the show today two very important stories, one involving a child who got her hair stuck in an escalator when she was sitting on one of the steps. The other from Hong Kong when a construction lift platform gave way killing six.

Have safe travels everyone.

We’re back on the air after a three day weekend thanks to Labor Day.  I wish I had one of these at least once a month as I could use the extra day to relax with family.  Not so heavy on the news this week and no accidents, which is always a good thing. Still trying to get ready for the United in Orlando Show as many of you are out there, it is fast approaching, isn’t it? On a side note, do you recognize the logo in the center of the pushbutton plate? We’ve had some excellent help in trying to identify the manufacturer but we’re not 100% sure. Help correctly identify this marking and I’ll send you the Elevator Radio Show t-shirt right off my back!

Bringing the show to you a few hours earlier and on a Tuesday night, my wife is away in Ohio with the boys and I’m on the patio podcasting with a beer in my hands. I always wanted to record a show out here so here it comes. Next week I think I might be on vacation. I know that sounds weird but we had it scheduled but something has come up so it’s kind of up in the air so check in next Wednesday. Special thanks to everyone who came out to the CEA Golf outing last Friday. We had a great turn out, just not great weather. Shorter show today as I’m pretty sure the world is on vacation this month.

Saturday was the day that the 2009 summer came to Chicago. Hot, humid and muggy I feel for those of you who work on elevators in this heat. As my mom always said make sure you drink lots of liquids. We saw 96 degrees on Sunday which to many of you is a bit on the cool side but for us the quick change was brutal.  We’ve got a shorter show today, only covering elevator news. Next week I may be on vacation but check back on Wednesday to see for sure. We have one last blast before the kids go back to school. Get yours in before it’s too late. Be safe and stay cool out there everyone.

It’s August already and we are really light on content this week. I have a feeling there are a lot of people going on vacations as summer winds down. There were two articles that are worthy of printing and saving on this weeks show. The first was a tragic news story in which a child was killed in a residential elevator which turns my stomach just thinking about it.  The other article talked about a man who was injured back in 2002 by a hydraulic elevator when he tried to figure out why it was leaking hydraulic fluid in the pit.  The guy was NOT an elevator mechanic, stupid is as stupid does.  Thanks for listening today everyone, be safe out there.

It’s nice to be back in the saddle again after a chilly wet vacation in the Northwood’s of Wisconsin.  The trouble with taking a week off is that the number of news stories that are online are too many to go through, still 94 in my inbox to review for next weeks show. Some very important stories on the show which will surprise the heck out of you! Plus we’re giving away a coffee pack from the Backroads Coffee Shop in Hayward Wisconsin where they roast their own coffee beans.  I ran on a pot of this a day last week on my vacation.  Enjoy the show everyone!

Thanks to the following companies who have donated goodies to our end of the month prize pack! Fujitec America, GAL, The National Association of Elevator Contractors, The National Association of Elevator Safety Authorities, The Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation, COMPANY SRL, Peelle, C.J. Anderson, Truxes, EMS Group, Elevator Bob’s Elevator Pictures, Minnesota Elevator, ElevatorGear.com, ElevatorShack.com, ElevatorU.org & Elevator World Magazine.

It was great to see those of you who came out for the EESF Chicago Cruise last week. I was impressed at the support from many of you who traveled near and far to support the EESF! I personally would like to send a warm thank you to everyone who helped make the event a success! We raised enough money to educate over 56,000 kids. We look forward to next year's event when we hope it will be a little bit warmer and sunnier! Light on content this week but a couple of articles worthy of sharing with your colleagues. Next week there will be no show as I'll be on vacation. I'm looking forward to a week off in the Northwood's of Wisconsin where I'll be enjoying the great outdoors with my family. Thanks for listening to the show today everyone, be safe out there!

As I balance my allergy medicine and coffee intake I do my best to get through this weeks show but struggle a bit. Unfortunately some very sad news as an elevator mechanic is struck by an elevator and killed in Florida.  It seems that there are multiple accidents in the news which involve kids and adults. In addition to these stories you'll get to hear me rant a bit on a Illinois Senate Bill extending the time that elevators are required to comply with code. Our legislators are under the impression this extension has the full support of the Illinois elevator community, which is not true. Thanks for joining us today on the show everyone, be safe out there!

Not as much news on the show today as I thought there would be. One elevator related death which involved a blind person and a non functioning door interlock apparently. I’m sure that we’ll learn more about this accident as the investigation continues. Other than news I’ll be covering the calendar of events. There are some great marketing opportunities out there and if you’re cutting your advertising or marketing dollars down because of the economy please reconsider. We're giving away $100 everyone, plus some great goodies from the companies listed below. This is our way of way of saying thanks for listening each week! I cover more international accidents on this week's show that I think I did all last year.  There are also a couple of articles specifically addressing accountability for building access and ADA.  I think we are going to see a new trend of lawsuits against cities, companies and building owners if elevators are not meeting the needs of those with disabilities.  There's also a cool picture you don't want to miss. Here's a hint, it involves a Porsche and an elevator!

Thanks to the following companies who have donated goodies to the prize pack giveaway.   Fujitec America, GAL, The National Association of Elevator Contractors, The National Association of Elevator Safety Authorities, The Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation, COMPANY SRL, Peelle, C.J. Anderson, Truxes, EMS Group, Elevator Bob's Elevator Pictures, Minnesota Elevator, Inc, The ElevatorNetwork, Elevator Gear & The Elevator Shack Forums.

Great show today everyone as I'll be sharing with you the interview that was recorded on April 3rd with the NAEC. Special guests; Executive Director Teresa Shirley, President Steve DeGrenier and Board Member Mike Klehr all stopped by to talk about what's been happening at the NAEC. I really enjoyed our time together and quickly realized that the NAEC does an excellent job at bringing as much bang for the buck to all of its members. This is a great interview and I appreciate them taking the time to stop in! If you're not already a member of the NAEC I encourage you to join. In addition to the great networking opportunities there's a very good chance you'll pay for your membership with the savings from some of the business programs that are offered. Visit www.naec.org today or give them a call at 1-800-900-6232.

I hope you all enjoyed St. Patrick's Day! Some of you I am sure perhaps enjoyed it a little too much. Here in Chicago it was a warm 70 degrees which uplifted the spirits a bit. We've got another full show everyone, a couple of very important stories to talk about as another person loses his life in an elevator accident.  When others who are not trained to work on elevators and escalators try to fix them, the chance death is very likely. Do we need to place big yellow warning sticker on every elevator door with graph photos of people dying in order to get this point across. Someone's going to be in big trouble after OSHA and the state get through with their investigation.

It's hard to believe that we're on show #150 already. In some ways it's like being married. Sometimes I tell my wife, wow, we've been married for 12 years and it feels like a lifetime....but in a good way! You got to throw that last comment in or else you're screwed!  It's been a lot of fun putting the show together and I appreciate all of your support!  With 53,648 downloads total over the last 150 shows I'm humbled by it all....I still think that no one is listening! I trick myself into thinking this so I don't have a panic attack every Wednesday.

On the show today I'll provide an update on the EESF Meeting that I attended last week and cover the news that I've found online this week. As always, thanks for tuning in to the show this week!

Today on the show we’ll be giving away a cab commander to one of you lucky listeners so hang in until the end of the show. Next week I’m headed to Atlanta for the EESF Annual meeting and I’m excited about it as I’ve never been to one before. There’s a 95% chance that there will be no show next week. We’ll see how much news there is and whether or not I can get the show produced Tuesday morning or before I head out to Atlanta that night.  Some great comments on the show today and some that even like the shorter show format.  Have a safe week everyone!

I just learned that Charlie Dolan, founder of Atlas Elevator, passed away on February 15th.  I remember dropping an order off at Atlas one day only to find Charlie working hard at his drafting table. Atlas for a while had three generations all working together which to me was quite an accomplishment. I invite all of you to sign his guest book by clicking here. I found some really good articles this week that I'll be sharing on the program. The one that was blogged about the most was the bankruptcy of Muzak. I'm honestly not sure why it didn't happen sooner. Another great article involves the TSSA and the liability and responsibility they have in making sure elevators and escalators are safe. Don't miss next week's show, another prize pack giveaway, which is going to be a cab commander from the Duluth Trading Company. Get your name on the e-mail list to be eligible to win.

Great show today, lots of interesting stories that I found from all over the world. We've also got some great e-mails and commentaries too. Please welcome retired Elevator Mechanic Jim from Northern California who has started his own blog where he shares some great stories from his time in the trade. I forgot to talk about it on the show today and wanted to make sure you all check it out. The link is in the fun elevator stuff column on the website and can also be seen by clicking here. There are two really good articles worthy of printing out this week. One involves the OSHA findings in an elevator technician's death and the other talks about a lawsuit in which only the owner of the elevators was sued and no one else. I'll share my comments about it during the show and invite you to share yours as well. We're also going to be giving away a Maxtor external backup drive compliments of ElevatorBob.com.

It's great to be back everyone after yet another week off.  What a week it's been, a total SNAFU when it came to electronics here in my life last week, I'll share more about it on the show.  With the inauguration of President Obama yesterday, let's hope that our government officials work together to tackle the tough issues that we face as a nation and globally.

In any case, we do have a packed show today. Next week we're giving away a Maxtor back up drive so you too don't experience the same nightmare that I went through. Sign up for the e-newsletter to become eligible to win! (Pictured: Have an extra $23.5 laying around? A glass elevator in the middle of the building showcases this home)

Happy New Year everyone! I think this might be a first, doing a show on New Years Eve or morning I should say. What a year it's been. I realize that with the economy tanking the way it is many of you are hurting right now. Part of my 2009 show goals including bringing a couple of stories a week on how you and your family can save some money each week. I've added a news feed that specifically looks for these kinds of articles. We will continue to be here for you and plan on providing the monthly prize pack giveaways as well. Today's is a digital video recorder, compliments of ElevatorGear.com.

Have a safe and happy New Years celebration tonight everyone.

It's good to be back after a week off from the show. It's starting to look a lot like Christmas as the US get's hit with some pretty bad weather, ice storms, snow and rain. It's not even winter yet!  We've got a good show for you today and I've got lots of energy.  As we head into the last weekend before the holiday try not to get bogged down with holiday humbug. Take a moment and give thanks for all that you have no matter how little it might be. Enjoy the holidays with some good food, drink and family.

No show next week as it's Christmas Eve but we will be back on the following week. The last day of the year! We'll give away our last prize pack giveaway for 2008 which is going to be a Flip Video Recorder. Have a nice holiday everyone.
